Fitness studios plan ‘swap’

SALEM — Two local fitness studios will conduct a “Studio Swap” featuring the Salem Second Saturday theme, “New Year, New You” on Saturday. At 8:15 a.m., Tricia Hovorka, owner of Your Best Self Fitness Studio, will lead a 30-minute Body Weight High Intensity Interval Training class at Salem Yoga and Mindfulness located in Courtyard Square at 645 E. State St.

At 10:30 a.m., Abi Dalesandro, owner of Salem Yoga and Mindfulness, will lead a 30-minute yoga class in the yoga room at Your Best Self, 273 Benton Road. Both classes are free and anyone interested in attending should come a few minutes early to sign a waiver.

Malone music ministry at service

GOSHEN TWP. — East Goshen Friends Church will host the music ministry team from Malone University during the morning worship service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. The music team will lead an acoustic-style worship service with testimonies from the team members.

Planing for Salem Memorial Day set

SALEM — The Salem Memorial and Patriotic Association will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at AMVETS Post 45, 750 S. Broadway Ave. Plans for Memorial Day will be discussed.

Salem Band Boosters to meet

SALEM — The Salem Band Boosters will hold its monthly general meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in the high school band room. Discussion items include: director and financial reports, New York City trip updates, spaghetti dinner planning and capital uniform campaign updates. Parents and grandparents of students in grades five to 12 are welcome. Additional calendar and organization information are available at salembandboosters.com.

Chicken and biscuit dinner planned

SALEM — A chicken and biscuit dinner and bake sale will be served from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Jan. 19 at Bunker Hill Methodist Church at 15096 Middletown Road. Cost is $8 for adults, $5 for children ages 5 to 12 and free for 4 and under. The menu includes chicken, biscuits, gravy, mashed potatoes, glazed carrots, applesauce or cole slaw, cake, coffee or punch. Carryouts are available. “The Kurdish Bike” discussion topic

SALEM — On Jan. 22, the Adult Book Discussion Group will meet at 7 p.m. in the Quaker Room of Salem Public Library to discuss the book “The Kurdish Bike” by Alesa Lightbourne. The book is the fictional story of single mom Theresa Turner who answers an advertisement to teach at a Kurdish school in Iraq. Thrown into an unknown world, she has to live in a third world country torn apart by war and reconcile with new cultural values. She attempts to make sense of critical issues, like violence, lack of respect for women, poverty and the characteristics of war-ridden areas. As she struggles to implement the school’s rigid curriculum and weathers financial calamity, the purchase of a bicycle lets her explore the beauty of the local bazaar and to occupy two worlds. Copies of the book are available for checkout at the library. No registration is required.

Genealogy program offered

SALEM — “Internet Resources to Grow Your Family Tree” begins at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 28 in the Salem Public Library’s Quaker Room at 821 E. State St. The one-hour genealogy program will be presented by Wendy Adkins, senior library associate at Blair Memorial Library at the Kent State University East Liverpool campus. Through the use of a variety of free, online Internet tools Adkins will demonstrate how to start researching your own genealogy and ancestry.

Retired Teachers Association fundraiser

CALCUTTA — The Columbiana County Retired Teachers Association is attempting to raise funds to support Classroom Grants for educators from 11 county school districts. The Calcutta Ponderosa Restaurant will provide their support by donating 10 percent of a patron’s receipt.

Each patron must mention their support to the cashier upon paying. Community members are encouraged to help the Retired Teachers Association provide future classroom teachers with funding for projects and supplies.

Chicken parmesan dinner in Leetonia

LEETONIA–The St. Patrick Catholic Church seventh- and eighth-grade Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) class will host a chicken parmesan dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. Jan. 29 at the church. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under. Proceeds will go toward the St. Patrick Food Pantry.

West Branch kindergarten registration

BELOIT–Kindergarten registration for the 2019-2020 school year will be held by appointment only on March 21 and 22. Registration will take place at the West Branch High School.

Any child who is 5 years of age on or before Sept. 30, 2019 and resides within the West Branch School District is eligible to be registered. Call the Superintendent’s Office at 330-938-9324 to schedule an appointment.

Non-residents planning to apply their child for open enrollment will also need to schedule an appointment for registration. Open enrollment applications will be available at the registration appointment for kindergarten only. To be eligible for open enrollment, the child must be 5 years of age by the date set by the district of residence. Contact the Superintendent’s Office in the resident district to confirm that date.

The following items will be required at registration: birth certificate, social security card, immunization records, custody/court papers (if applicable) and proof of residency (utility bill, lease/purchase agreement, driver’s license). We will also need to copy a form of ID of the person who is registering their child. Only the custodial parent/guardian can register a child for kindergarten.

Registration will not be complete until all required forms are provided.

Visual tour of downtown Columbiana

COLUMBIANA — The Columbiana Area Tourism Bureau, the Historical Society of Columbiana and the Columbiana First Committee of the Chamber of Commerce will unveil the anticipated project “The Journey to Today,” a visual tour of downtown Columbiana business sites from 1806 to the present. Thanks to a generous grant from the Columbiana Community Foundation, video frames were purchased and will feature fascinating photos and information on the past of each storefront.

On Jan. 26, visitors are welcome to stop in local businesses from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and view the frames.At 7 p.m., Main Street Theater invites everyone to view the Columbiana Area Tourism Bureau-produced film on the history of Columbiana and hear special guest speaker Jay Groner.

The video frames will then be permanently on display in the local businesses. This event is free and open to the public. For more information call the Columbiana Area Chamber of Commerce office at 330-482-3822.
