Salem Alumni to honor retired generals from class of 1977

SALEM–Two 1977 graduates of Salem High School who were generals in their respective military branches have been selected by the Salem High School Alumni Association for its 2019 Honored Alumnus Award. Retired Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Robert Ruark ’77 and retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Jay G. Santee ’77 will be the featured speakers at the Salem High School Alumni Association’s 138th Annual Reunion & Banquet at 6 p.m. May 18 in the Salem High School Cafeteria.

The association will be awarding numerous scholarships to graduating seniors and college students. These include the Academic Merit and named high school and postsecondary scholarships that recognize various abilities and achievements.

Tickets for the dinner are $25 and must be purchased in advance by noon May 10 at SHSAA’s office at 330 E. State St. Attendees can call 330-332-1427 or email info@salemohioalumni.org for tickets to be mailed to them. Those interested in being a $35 patron sponsor with program acknowledgement are encouraged to donate by April 29. For information call the SHSAA office, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. until noon.

Founder’s Day dinner

SALEM–Reservations for the Salem Historical Society’s Founders’ Day Dinner and recognition of the 2019 “Citizens of Honor” Karen Lehwald Carter, Donald Weingart and Richard “Dick” Wootten are still being taken until April 23.

The dinner is April 30 at the Salem Community Center. Doors open at 5 p.m. with a buffet dinner served at 6 p.m. Tickets are $25. The Pick-A-Ticket Auction will also be held. Call the reservation hot line, 330-337-6733. If additional information is needed, call 330-337-8514.

Salem Music Study Club

to meet Wednesday

SALEM– The Music Study Club of Salem will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church educational building. The meeting will be the final one of the season or calendar year and will include discussion of the conference held in Lisbon a few weeks back, scholarship dates and officer elections for the next upcoming year. All guests and members are welcome.

The meeting will be followed by a program of children’s music by Sarah Gustwiller, and another friend as guest. Refreshments will follow. The Music Study Club of Salem is a member of the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs and the National Federation of Music Clubs.

Salem’s Communiversity Choir to present ‘Songbook’

SALEM–Kent State University at Salem’s Communiversity Choir will present “The Great American Songbook” at 7 p.m. April 27 at the City Center Auditorium, 230 N. Lincoln Ave.

The event will feature songs made popular by some of America’s greatest performers and composers from days gone by. It will be directed by Melissa Fucci and also include a performance by special guests The Village Singers of Lisbon.
