‘Bling Thing’ craft class set at library

SALEM–The Salem Public Library’s July Gettin’ Crafty class will feature “BLING THING” at 6:30 p.m. July 8 in the Quaker Room.

Choose an item to “bling out” and have fun with the available materials. No two items will look the same. All materials will be provided at this program that is open to the public and free of cost to attend. Registration is required and seating is limited, so sign up online at www.salem.lib.oh.us or call 330-332-0042 for registration assistance.

Gettin’ Crafty class is held on the second Monday of each month and features a craft for beginner to intermediate crafting skill.

Minerva Chamber Rodeo scheduled for July 27

MINERVA–The fourth annual Minerva Chamber Rodeo comes to Minerva’s Municipal Park on Saturday, July 27, with activities for the whole family.

Children’s activities will begin at 3 p.m., with pony rides, a petting zoo, stick-horse making and other crafts, and food and commercial vendors.

Kids’ rodeo events, sponsored by Minerva Area YMCA and Minerva Rotary Club, will begin in the arena, with stick-horse races and preliminaries for mutton busting, in which children weighing 50 pounds or less compete to see who can stay on the back of a sheep the longest. Helmets and vests are provided.

The rodeo, presented by Buckeye Rodeo Company, begins at 7 p.m. In addition to bull riding, bareback bronc riding, saddle bronc riding, calf roping, team roping, steer wrestling, and barrel racing, the mutton busting finals and the calf scramble for kids will take place.

Following the rodeo, at 9 p.m., the Minerva Firefighter’s Association will sponsor a free concert by country musician Erica Dawn on the stage. The firefighter’s association will also provide a beer garden throughout the day.

Presale tickets can be purchased through July 26 at Kishman’s IGA, Loudon Motors Ford, Gionino’s Pizzeria in Minerva, the Minerva Area YMCA, Sphon’s CCW & Armory, Consumers National Bank – Minerva Branch, Studio C Salon and the Minerva Area Chamber of Commerce, or on www.eventbrite.com.

Presale tickets are $10 for age 12 and older, $5 for ages 6 to 11, and free for ages 5 and younger. At the gate, tickets will be $12 and $6. Parking is available at Minerva High School, 501 Almeda Ave.

Diabetes Empowerment Education Program offered

YOUNGSTOWN–Mahoning County Public Health is offering free Diabetes Empowerment Education Program (DEEP) classes from 9 to 11 a.m. beginning July 8 at the Davis Family YMCA, 45 McClurg Road in Boardman. The workshop consists of six weekly sessions ending Aug. 19, with a mid-class break on July 29.

DEEP is for individuals with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, or pre-diabetes. The program encourages small lifestyle changes while learning about diabetes and the way it affects health. DEEP consists of sixt interactive two-hour small group sessions which allow participants to have fun with others while learning how to self-manage diabetes. The workship is available for individuals 60 years of age or older and have Medicare or Medicare/Medicaid.

Denise’s Big Back Yard to be held today

SALEM–Denise’s Big Back Yard will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the First Presbyterian Church, 436 E. Second St. The outreach neighborhood mission will be meeting every Wednesday for the next eight weeks, except July 3. The evening consists of food, fun and fellowship. The first week will feature an Ice Breaker game about getting to know you. There will always be a giant Jenga game, corn hole and giant bubbles.

Programs set at Sebring, Greenford libraries

YOUNGSTOWN — The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County has announced a number of local events at its libraries for July.

— The Sebring Library will host Galaxy Rock Painting at 2:30 p.m. July 8. Explore the galaxy by creating art with rocks. For tweens and teens.

— The Greenford Library will host Soap! Soap! Soap!, a program featuring stories and a soap craft for children of all ages at 3 p.m. July 17. Preschoolers must attend with an adult. For children of all ages.

— The Sebring Library will host What Happens if You Give a Mouse a Cookie? At 11 a.m. July 27. The program is a celebration of the books of author Laura Numeroff with stories, crafts and more fun For children of all ages.
