Star Trax 5K Night Run set at Reilly Stadium Aug. 3

SALEM — The 2019 Star Trax 5K Night Run starts at 9 p.m. Saturday, August 3, at Reilly Stadium.

Dr. Joe Shivers, who is retiring as Salem City Schools Superintendent on July 31, was selected by the X-tra Mile Club as the official starter of the race that sends runners through the luminary-lit neighborhoods near Centennial Park.

Shivers, who began his teaching career as a substitute teacher in Salem in 1971, returned as director of curriculum in 2001. In between he served in the Peace Corps, taught in Catholic schools, earned a master’s degree at Ohio State University, and a master’s and doctorate from Harvard University, taught college courses, and worked as a school administrator in Kirtland, East Palestine, and Columbiana.

In the 18 years since Shivers returned to the Salem schools, he has also served as middle school principal, high school principal, and, for the last five years, superintendent.

Since the late 1990s when his sons began running cross country, Shivers has happily served with dozens of other Star Trax volunteers who work at intersections in the residential neighborhood around Centennial Park during the annual race that benefits Salem High School’s track and cross country teams. The 5K race usually has between 700 and 800 runners.

Online Registration is $17 at Gopher A Run (https://gopherarun.com/reg/races/star-trax.run) until July 29. (Please bring online receipt with you for confirmation.) T-shirts are guaranteed to participants who pre-registered by July 22.

Onsite registration on the day of the race begins at 7 p.m. and closes at 8:45 p.m.

Seventy-two race awards will be given immediately after results are available from the chip timing to the top three overall males; top three overall females; and the top three in each of the following age groups: 10 & Under, 11-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60 & Over. There will be no duplication of awards.
