Giant Pumpkin weigh-off is Oct. 12

CANFIELD — The Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers will hold their 25th annual giant pumpkin weigh-off on Oct. 12 at Parks Garden Center, 9010 U.S. Route 62.

The current Ohio record (2,150 pounds) is held by Todd Skinner of Barnesville. The Pennsylvania record (2,090 pounds) is held by Dave and Carol Stelts of Enon Valley. Last year’s winning pumpkin was 2,416.5 pounds (New York record) by Karl Haist of Clarence Center, N.Y.

Prize money this year will exceed $20,000 for the heaviest categories of giant pumpkins, watermelon, tomato and Halloween type pumpkin. Also included are widest sunflower head and longest gourd. Heaviest pumpkin will be awarded the $5,000 first place prize. The Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers is comprised of 200 members and is a weigh-off for the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth. The Great Pumpkin Commonwealth conducts over 100 weigh-offs in many countries to determine the world champion. Those growers wishing to enter any of the categories need to have their entry at Parks Garden Center by 9 a.m. Oct. 12. The actual weigh-off will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day. Exhibits will remain on display until 4 p.m.

There is no admission charge and a lunch stand will be available.
