Women Retirees

of YSU to offer Scholarship

YOUNGSTOWN-The scholarship committee of the Women Retirees of Youngstown State University is accepting applications through March 1, 2020 for the 2020-21 Academic Year.

The scholarship is awarded to a full-time, junior female student who maintains a minimum 3.0 grade point average. The recipient must be a U.S. citizen and be enrolled in a degree-seeking program.

Information about the scholarship is available at www.ysu.edu/finaid/scholarships.  Application forms may be printed from the website or picked up at the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships located on the second floor of Meshel Hall at YSU.

free jazz concert

SALEM- The Salem Community Center will offer a complimentary jazz concert featuring the Yarnell Five from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 17. For information call the 330-332-5885.

United Local vocal concert is Sunday

HANOVERTON-The United Local Vocal Music Department Christmas concert will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the High School Auditorium. Featured will be the Jr. High Choir and Touch of Gold Show Choir, and High School Mixed Chorus, Concert Choir and Flight Show Choir. Admission is free but donations will be accepted.

Procrastinator’s Shopping Event set

CANFIELD-A Procrastinator’s Shopping Event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 21 at St. Michael’s Church Family Life Center, 340 N. Broad St.

This last-minute gift shopping experience will provide an opportunity for the local community to shop with local small business vendors who have very unique items that will be available for gifting. A wide variety of vendors include those with handcrafted items such as wooden lighting, holiday crafts, rugs and handwoven pieces, recycled metal art, jewelry, and boutique clothing for women, as well as gifts for men, like beard products.

There will be bakers, makers and crafters, as well as some of the favorite small businesses, like Damsel in Defense, Scentsy, Paparazzi, DoTerra Oils, Pampered Chef and Mary Kay.

Shoppers are asked to bring a food item to donate as well which will be collected at the door. Free admission to all.

Deerfield dance planned for Monday

DEERFIELD-The Deerfield Historical Society’s third Monday dance will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Dec. 16 at the Deerfield Town Hall, 1450 state Route 14. The Deerfield House Band will play a variety of dance music. Refreshments will also be available for purchase. Admission is $4.  

Reservations are also being accepted for the New Year’s Dinner Dance to be held at the same venue, 6:30 p.m. until midnight. Couple admission is $25, single $15. Call Sally Sampson at 330-654-3168 or attend the Monday dance to make a reservation.

SCT to hold junior musical auditions

SALEM-Auditions are coming up for The Salem Community Theatre’s production of Aladdin JR. Auditions will be held at 6 p.m. Dec. 15 and 16. The production will be directed by Justin Steele and sponsored by Visiting Angels. Those interested in auditioning must prepare a one-minute section from a song of their choice. (There will be no accompanist provided.) Use a phone, or cd without voices for auditions or sing a Capella. Those auditioning will also be asked to read from the script. Casting ages 7 to 18 years old. For information contact the theatre on Facebook or call 330-332-9688 Ext. 3.

Local church to host cookie walk

CANFIELD-Calla Community Church, 6482 W. Calla Road, will be hold its annual cookie walk at 10 a.m. Saturday. The sale will continue until the cookies are sold out. (They usually go fast, be there at 10 a.m. for the best selection.)  There will be no early sales.  The price of the cookies will be $5 per dozen. The funds that are raised will go to continue the Calla Church mission work. For information call the church at 330-533-6007.
