SPL adult book

discussion planned

SALEM– The Adult Book Discussion at Salem Public Library will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Jan. 28 in the Quaker Room. The January book selection is Tayari Jones’ novel “An American Marriage,” which illustrates the personal toll of the criminal justice system.

Roy grew up in a working-class family in Louisiana; he was hardworking and intelligent which earned him a college scholarship. By the time he meets and marries Celestial she is an up-and-coming artist. After a year of marriage, they’re considering buying a home and starting a family. Then, on a visit back home, Roy is arrested, tried, convicted and imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. When Roy goes to prison it is in Louisiana and Celestial is in Atlanta which creates heartbreaking separation for them. During Roy’s incarceration Celestial’s best friend, Andre, becomes a more prominent influence in her life which creates tension between Roy and Celestial once he is freed. The story is driven by interpersonal drama, but is also about being black in contemporary America.

New participants are welcome to join the discussion group. Check with the library for the availability of the book to borrow.
