EAST PALESTINE — The Rotary Club of East Palestine has canceled the annual Community Yard Sale usually held in September at the Village Park.

SRMC Ostomy Support Group will meet Aug. 10

SALEM–Salem Regional Medical Center’s (SRMC) Ostomy Support Group will resume meetings Aug. 10 for area residents who have an ostomy or are preparing for ostomy placement. The group will meet from 6 to 7 p.m. in SRMC’s Private Dining Room, located at the back of the cafeteria on the hospital’s ground floor.

Meetings were temporarily suspended in the spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

SRMC’s free Ostomy Support Group offers education, encouragement and emotional support for people with any type of ostomy, including those with permanent or temporary urostomies; ileostomies and colostomies. Meetings also address some of the common concerns faced by people with ostomies, such as skin care; pouching; activity and nutrition. Sessions are led by SRMC’s certified wound, ostomy and continence nurse, and there is no cost to participate.

SRMC is taking enhanced precautions to ensure the health and safety of staff and patients during their visit, and all those entering the facility will undergo a health screening upon arrival. Support group attendees should use SRMC’s Parking Garage entrance, and are asked to wear a mask and follow social distancing guidelines.

Pre-registration for the Ostomy Support Group meeting is requested. To register for the Aug. 10 meeting or for questions, call Tashia Watkins, RN, BSN, CWOCN, at 330-332-7607.

MVHS cancels ‘Culture and Cuisine Nights’

YOUNGSTOWN– Mahoning Valley Historical Society (MVHS) has canceled its remaining three ‘Culture and Cuisine Nights” scheduled for this fall. With continued precautions for public health and the nature of these big crowd events, MVHS has decided to focus efforts on planning 2021 events for this series.

“We felt it wouldn’t be in the community’s best interest to bring a large group of people together at this time,” said George D. Beelen, Chair of the Mahoning Valley Cultural Alliance. The MVCA is an advisory group of volunteers dedicated to promoting cultural education for Mahoning Valley Historical Society. This group was formerly known as the Ohio Cultural Alliance before being incorporated into MVHS in 2019. Linda Kostka, the Development Director for the Historical Society added, “What makes these particular events truly special is the communal dining and socializing, while experiencing cultural enrichment through live ethnic performances. That doesn’t translate so easily with the kind of virtual formats we’ve adopted for some of our other programming during these cautious times.”

“Culture and Cuisine Nights” began last year with two, well-attended events in October and November, celebrating Hispanic customs and Victorian Christmas traditions, respectively. The 2020 springtime events were planned to showcase German and Romanian cultures.

The fall events were to highlight Italian, African, and Greek cultures. The MVCA group will consider these again for the 2021 series. If anyone has questions or comments about these social and educational events, contact Kostka at 330-743-2589, ext. 125 or lkostka@mahoninghistory.org.
