Headed to fishing championships

Garrett Dean, a West Branch sophomore in the Student Fishing League, has reeled in a spot in the B.A.S.S. Master High School Series National Championship in Kentucky next week. Dean, who began fishing at the age of four, casts his lure at the Ohio River, Mosquito Lake, Deer Creek Reservoir, Lake Erie and local farm ponds. He has been in about a dozen tournaments, and his personal records include a four-pound largemouth bass and a 5.6 pound smallmouth bass. This seasoned angler started fishing to accomplish something productive in his free time to keep from being bored. He credits his success to his persistence in his practice, strategically focusing on patterns, switching up bait and having a great partner and boater coach. (Submitted photo)
