SALEM — Salem Regional Medical Center (SRMC) recognized Karla Rotar, RN, as its third DAISY Award winner, since starting the program in mid-2024. This national award was created by family members of patient J. Patrick Barnes, to recognize outstanding nurses across the country, who go above and beyond in providing compassionate care along the patient care journey.

Rotar, a registered nurse on the Tower-2 nursing unit, was nominated by the daughter of an SRMC patient.

“Karla has been a dedicated SRMC employee for many years,” explained SRMC Director of Nursing Leigh Knife, MSN, RN. “She consistently displays safe, high quality and compassionate care. Her nominator is a fellow nurse, who is also a Quality Director at another healthcare facility. She was impressed by Karla’s ability to tailor care to her mother’s needs while maintaining all aspects of infection control, process, procedures and most of all kindness.

“We found it very impressive that Karla made such an impact on someone who would have an eye for proper process. She consistently does what is right for the patient no matter who is watching.”

Rotar’s nominator wrote on her nomination form, “I was so glad that Karla took care of my mother and feel that she contributed to her recovery and healing during this acute care stay. From one nurse to another, thanks for caring for my mother as I would have cared for her myself and would want to be cared for if I were a patient in your hospital.”

Rotar was one of 21 nurses at SRMC nominated for this quarter’s award by their colleagues, patients or their families.

“We launched the DAISY Award program to honor and recognize the excellent care that our nurses are practicing; and highlight those who demonstrate our organization’s ICARE values of Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence,” Knife continued.
