Man killed by train in East Liverpool

EAST LIVERPOOL–An East Liverpool man was killed Tuesday morning after being hit and struck by a train.

According to an incident report, East Liverpool police responded at 4:22 a.m. to the 800 block of West 8th Street near Robertson’s Heating and Cooling, after callers received a call from Norfolk Southern Railroad police stating that a person was lying on the tracks and possible was run over. The train stopped to evaluate the situation and requested a Columbiana County coroner to the scene within minutes.

The locomotive’s conductor advised that he was operating the vehicle southbound when he witnessed a male lying in the fetal position between the rails of the train.

He added, “the train was traveling at a low rater of speed due to passing a northbound locomotive while en route. The two locomotives had shut off their headlights on the trains due to blinding each other.”

East Liverpool police arrived initially to the scene and contacted Norfolk Southern police, who expected to arrive around 6:30 a.m.; the coroner and ELFD-ASI ambulance, which took the victim to the city morgue.

Repeated attempts to contact the coroner’s office to confirm the victim’s identity were unsuccessful.
