Wednesday wintery weather causes chaos on surrounding roadways
SALEM — Salem Police assisted both Perry and Goshen Township police departments with traffic control after the snowy conditions caused problems for motorists at Cunningham and Butcher roads and the Millville Hill on state Route 14 just west of Egypt Road Wednesday evening.
The first incident was reported at 4:41 p.m. due to a rollover crash in Perry Township just outside the city, with the inclement weather playing a role with freezing road conditions. Officers stood by at Cunningham and Butcher until no longer needed. According to an emergency dispatch report, the Perry Township fire department was tied up on Cunningham north of state Route 344 for an accident from 4:37 p.m. to 5:38 p.m.
Salem officers also assisted Goshen Township Police with traffic on East State Street/state Route 14 just outside the city at 5:04 p.m. The responding officer found that the hill just east of Walmart known as the Millville Hill was ice and snow-covered with multiple vehicles stuck both eastbound and westbound. One vehicle was sideways halfway down the hill and unable to move.
The state was attempting to locate an Ohio Department of Transportation truck to salt the hill. The officer advised many motorists to use caution and wait for the salt truck if they could.
A Goshen officer assisted and took over at state Route 14 and Egypt Road. No crashes were found or responded to by the officer at that time.
