Woman faces prison, yet hopes for parole

LISBON — A former Wellsville woman who tried to flee from police and struck two of them pleaded guilty to two charges in this week in Common Pleas Court.

Krista L. Luckino, 48, Saint George Street, East Liverpool, pleaded guilty to two lesser included offenses — attempted failure to comply, a fourth-degree felony, and felonious assault, a second-degree felony.

Judge Megan Bickerton said the maximum sentences for the charges would be nine and a half years and a $20,000 fine. While Assistant County Prosecutor Alec Beech is requesting Bickerton consider a two-year prison sentence for Luckino, her defense attorney, Joseph King, said he will ask for probation in the matter.

Sentencing was set for Dec. 7 to give the probation department time to conduct a presentencing investigation and an evaluation for possible placement at the Eastern Ohio Correction Center.

According to court records and reports from the time of the incident, Wellsville police were called to Pep’s Mini Mart on Clark Avenue on March 13, 2019, where a woman had been sitting in a vehicle in the parking lot for three hours.

When the car was approached by police, Luckino reportedly told them she was scratching lottery tickets, but when police ran her license, she was found to have an expired license. Police asked her for permission to search the vehicle, but she told them “No, follow me home,” before putting her vehicle in reverse.

First the car struck the leg of Patrolman John Shaughnessy, who was attempting to get Luckino out of the vehicle through the driver’s door. Another patrolman, Danny Wallace, was walking around the vehicle. Luckino next reportedly drove forward and struck Wallace as well.

Police Chief Eddie Wilson said at the time, Luckino took off the wrong way down the one-way street. Both police officers returned to the patrol car and pursued Luckino, finding her near her parent’s home, which Wilson said was near the intersection of 18th and Commerce streets.

After police broke out the window on the passenger side of the vehicle, Luckino was taken into custody.
