Robert William “Bob” Salmen
RALEIGH, N.C. — Robert William “Bob” Salmen, 68, of Raleigh, N.C., died on Jan. 20 following a brave fight against non-smoking related lung cancer.
Born on April 17, 1950, in Salem, he was the son of the late William Otto Salmen and Esther Louise Welch Salmen.
Mr. Salmen was a Salem High School Class of 1968 graduate with honors. He received a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Cincinnati through a co-op opportunity with the Electric Furnace Company in Salem.
He had been employed as purchasing manager at Borg-Warner Chemicals in Parkersburg, W.Va., and retired in 2002 from Reichhold Chemicals in Raleigh. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church while residing in Salem.
Survivors include his wife, Susan (Pim) Salmen, whom he married on Sept. 18, 1971; a daughter, Sara Salmen, and son, Michael Salmen, all of Raleigh.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at 3 p.m. Feb. 2 in the Chapel of Mitchell Funeral Home in Raleigh, with a reception following. A gathering will also be held at 2 p.m. Feb. 16 at the First United Methodist Church in Salem.
