Support the substance abuse rally this Saturday

The lead story in our Monday edition detailed a substance abuse rally being held Saturday at Reilly Stadium in Salem.

It deserved that placement.

The Step of Change, Walk a Mile in My Shoes is what the event is called. It is a community event, open to the public. There will be speakers, entertainment and raffles. It will offer fellowship.

Most importantly it will be educational. Anyone directly affected – heck, even remotely affected – by the monstrous impact of drugs should take heed. The event begins at noon Saturday and will be a learning experience. It will be an opportunity to learn about the destruction created by drugs in our community. To learn what specific drugs are ravaging our citizens. To learn that, although it may not seems like it sometimes, you are not alone in your fight against drugs – whether you are an addict or someone close to an addict. To learn from the experts who will be there. To learn where to get treatment for drugs. To learn how to report suspicious drug activity to law officials. To learn from those officials ways they are combating the scourge. To learn that while, yes, the drugs battle will always be ongoing, victories do occur. Lives are being saved, families are being healed, criminals are being chased and punished. There are feel good, salvation stories to be heard.

The rally on Saturday will prove that there is strength in numbers. Make yourself count by attending. Just show up and listen. And mingle. Because you will learn. We listed specifics about The Step of Change, Walk a Mile in the Monday Salem News. The story is available at salemnews.net.

Businesses wanting to help out with raffle or food items are urged to do so. There isn’t a better available cause right now to extend your good will. Your generosity will be acknowledged on our pages following the rally. In case of rain, the event will move to the Memorial Building.

Those wanting to help out or need kind of information may contact co-director Brenda Hamilton at 330-277-9625. While you are at it make sure to thank her. She has literally been a human dynamo in putting this event together. Day in, day out she is a demonstrative voice in getting the word out loud and clear as an anti-drug crusader. We need more like her around here.
