Gratitude expressed for Salem Schools, community

To the editor:

From grade three until graduation in 1952 I received my education in the Salem School System. Since then I earned undergraduate and graduate college degrees and eventually taught 25 years in higher education. I am writing this letter to express my gratitude for what the Salem Schools and community provided me.

I grew up with an unending curiosity, which thankfully still remains; no fear of benign human differences, and an admiration of new discoveries and contributions. I harbor impatience with hate, ignorance, prevarication, and abject refusal to listen to new evidence and ideas.

I credit the safe atmosphere in which I was raised for protecting me from the fears that cause racism in all forms.

Think of our world if we should all be so lucky.
