Remembering a former county sheriff
To the editor:
The county lost another former sheriff last week. I was saddened to read of the death of David Smith, whose public service spanned more than three decades.
Just like his two predecessors, Robert Beresford and Richard Koffel, he came up through the ranks of the sheriff’s department. The journey honed both his law enforcement and people skills.
David always gave a little extra. I remember once when a murder trial went into Saturday, David arranged for lunch to be provided for the jury and court staff. Other times, he would stop by the courtroom where I was serving to ask, “Is there anything else our office can do to make things better ?”
David’s death notice described him as “one of the good guys.” Sheriff David Smith most certainly was.
