You can help the mission of the United Way

To the editor:

Thanksgiving is the “kick-off” to a busy season for all of us. Thanksgiving Day is followed by “Black Friday,” “Small Business Saturday,” “Cyber Monday” and “Giving Tuesday” (if there is any cash left).

Charities have learned that the month of December has become a very important part of their annual fund raising efforts. As a result we all get flooded with requests in the mail from charities far and wide and it can be overwhelming to know where your dollars will help the most. This year, please consider our local United Way.

Our local United Way supports 20 independent not-for-profit agencies serving Columbiana County. These organization provide a wide range of services to this area.

We support groups working with youth teaching them citizenship and self-sufficiency. We support the only battered woman’s shelter in the county. We support organizations that enable senior citizens to stay in their homes longer when they are ill or infirm. We support a group that provides kits to families displaced by abuse or entering foster care or who need diapers or other necessities. We support the local food bank in Hanoverton. We support the local Meals on Wheels in Columbiana. We support the local hearing and speech clinic held on Saturdays in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Salem.

We support the Salem Memorial Building that provides space to the Banquet and other groups as well as recreation services. We help provide aid to those in need through providing funds for bills, rent and food. We provide assistance to agencies that help those who have been burnt out by fires or have a service member family in need. We support agencies providing assistance to individuals and families dealing with drug addiction. We provide funding for making sure the 2-1-1 calls for assistance get answered so local people in need can find help quickly.

At your local United Way, our mission is to serve these agencies.

Please consider supporting the United Way of Northern Columbiana County this season. Our address is 713 E State St; Salem, OH 44460. Our web site is http://www.unitedwayofncc.org/ where donations can also be made. On our web site you can also see list of the agencies we support.

We urge you to give “local” this year. Thank you for your consideration and have a blessed Holiday and Christmas season.

Roger E Hack,

Board President,

United Way Services of Northern Columbiana County
