Appreciates the words of inspiration

To the editor:

I would like to thank Don Groubert, an OHSAA track official, for his inspirational words in his letter to the editor on the seniors and the other classes on losing all spring sports in 2020.

My background in sports covers 35 years as a player or coach. Don’s words and the letter from his track coach from 42 years ago was so motivational. Focus on what you can control. You can’t control what happened. But you can control how you respond to it. We are all called to make sacrifices for the various teams in our lives — be that team be our family, co-workers, employers, or the local community.

Regardless of losing out on your senior season you are going to be successful. Because you put in all that time, all the effort, all the hard work, and you know it’s going to pay off for you. That’s why we do our best. Don’t give up, don’t ever give up. Not just in sports, but across all aspects of life.

As Don said, don’t let this be the end, it’s time to pay it forward. Let it be the beginning of the next phase. Get involved in sports at the next level, go into coaching, or volunteering in your community. Don’t be a leaner. Be a lifter — lighting a path to our better selves. Thank you Don, for those timeless words of wisdom. All of us will benefit from them.

BOB SHILLING,
