United Way Services expresses gratitude
To the editor:
The Board of Directors of United Way Services of Northern Columbiana County wish to express their deepest thanks and gratitude to all the individuals, businesses and corporations that have supported this fall’s annual campaign. This has been a uniquely difficult year, and we are humbled by the generosity of our friends and neighbors. You demonstrate that working together does indeed make our community a better place.
For more than 125 years, United Way has been helping people in need throughout the United States. The United Way brand is instantly recognized around the world. The real beauty of United Way, however, is that each local United Way is an independent entity with its own board and governance structure.
United Way Services of Northern Columbiana County was incorporated in Ohio in 1983. It is governed by a local board of directors who set policy and practices, adopt budgets, and determine how donated funds are allocated to various agencies that are carefully vetted annually by our local budget committee.
United Way supports twenty local agencies providing service to approximately 70,000 people across norther Columbiana County. Visit www.unitedwayofncc.org to for more information about United Way agencies. They provide 100,000 direct units of service annually.
To receive United Way dollars, agencies must apply annually, provide detailed financial information, and attend an interview to answer questions about the work the agency does and how United Way funding would be used to make a difference in people’s lives.
Major benefits accrue to northern Columbiana County because of the United Way Network. We are able to tap into the partnership that United Way Worldwide has established with large national corporations and associations like the NFL. Anyone donating to a United Way anywhere in the country can designate their donations to our local United Way. Nearly one-fourth of our local United Way’s budget is received from donors across the country giving through the United Way in their community.
We want to assure everyone that all contributions made to your local United Way are expended right here in northern Columbiana County. Every United Way is defined by a specific footprint based on zip code. We raise and expend contributions within that footprint. Membership in the United Way Network equals 2% of our total budget. Everything else is given back to our community for one simple reason — United Way fights for the health, education and financial stability of every person in every community.
