EAST LIVERPOOL - A search of the Ohio River turned up nothing after city police received a report that someone had jumped from the Newell Bridge Friday night.

According to police, they were called about 8:47 p.m. that someone had jumped and officers reported hearing someone yelling for help when they got in the area but could not find anyone.

Chester and Newell, W.Va. fire departments launched four boats - two from each department - and searched for about 90 minutes around the bridge, river banks on both the Ohio and West Virginia sides and barges but found nothing, according to a fire department spokesman.

About 15 firefighters were involved in the search, which ended by 10 p.m.

Hancock County Sheriff's Department was contacted but had no additional information last night.
