SALEM - William C. "Bill" Mercer, 76, of Salem, died at 11:40 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012 at the Northside Medical Center in Youngstown.
He was born Nov. 28, 1935 in Salem, the son of the late William Howard and Pauline (Branntsch) Mercer.
Bill was a 1953 graduate of Goshen Union High School and before his retirement in 1989 he was a self-employed farmer. He was a member of the N.R.A.
He enjoyed both fishing and hunting and also enjoyed watching football, basketball, baseball, boxing and playing cards with his family. He was compassionate about his beagles.
His wife, Thalia Alice (Stowe) Mercer, whom he married Sept. 14, 1956, survives him along with a daughter, Paula Miller of Hanoverton; a sister, Kathleen Walden of Fruitland Park, Fla.; four grandchildren, Slade Miller, Rachael Miller, Billie Jo Mercer and Thad Mercer; and a great-grandson, Ripley McIntosh.
A son, Bill Mercer preceded him in death in 1991.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 8, 2012 at the Stark Memorial Funeral Home with Pastor Alan Smearsoll officiating.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Grandview Cemetery.
