Barbara Joan Whitacre

NORTH CANTON - Barbara Joan Whitacre, 78, of North Canton, died Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at Aultman Hospital Compassionate Care Center after a short illness.

She was born April 24, 1934, in Winona, Ohio, to Raymond H. and Edna I. (McClintick) Brandt. She graduated from Salem High School in 1952.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond E. Whitacre, on May 8, 2002. They were married on June 21, 1953, in Winona. She was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers Lowell and Galen; and sister-in-law Carol Brandt.

Survivors include her sons, Stuart (Kris) of Hartville, John (Annette) of Canton and Robert (Dee) of Plain City; grandchildren, Brian of Columbus, Erin (Joe) Gainer of Columbus, Rachel Alleshouse of North Canton, Andrew of Plain City, Allison of Columbus, Michelle of Plain City, and Britton, Adriane, Maison and Vivian of Hartville; great-grandson, Landon Alleshouse of North Canton; brothers Raymond H. Brandt Jr. (Ellen) of Marietta, Ga., and Robert (Cindy) Brandt of Winona; sisters-in-law Mickey Brandt of Winona and Joyce Brandt of Alliance; former exchange student Jutta Troegel of Munich, Germany; and many nieces and nephews.

Barbara was an expert seamstress and knitter, having worked at McCullough's in Salem, Doyle's Fabric and Yarn Shop in North Canton, and Logan Sports in North Canton, and she loved books, history, nature and dogs. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in North Canton, was a past president of Faith United Methodist Women and received its special mission recognition pin in 2007, and founded the Faith United Methodist Church prayer shawl ministry, which spread love and caring to sick, elderly and friends.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at Reed Funeral Home North Canton Chapel, Pittsburg Ave. NW, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at Faith United Methodist Church in North Canton.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Faith United Methodist Church, with burial to follow at 2:30 p.m. in Woodsdale Cemetery in Winona.
