LEETONIA- The Leetonia and Salem Township police departments are seeking donations for its annual holiday family assistance program.
The departments will conduct their 14th annual Care & Share Program, accepting donations through Dec. 19. The program provides assistance to families in need in the village and township during the holiday season. Monetary donations and gift cards and certificates are encouraged, according to Leetonia Police Chief John Soldano.
"We've been able to reach out to a lot of families over the years," he said. "[The program] has been very beneficial to the area."
In addition to monetary donations, Soldano said students in the Leetonia school district are conducting a non-perishable food drive. He also said that individuals can sponsor individual families, as well. Those who wish to sponsor a family should contact Soldano to receive family information such as clothing sizes and children's interests. Then they can purchase items to turn over to the police departments to deliver.
Soldano said there are no specific expectations in terms of collections, but explained that the program relies on the goodwill of the community to help out those fallen on hard times.
"It seems like there is probably a lot of people who need assistance now with the way the economy is going," he said. "We don't set a goal, but reach out to as many families as we can. There are a lot of people we hope to help during the holidays."
For information about the program contact Soldano at 330-427-6731 or Salem Township Constable Dan Valentine at 330-427-0808. Donations may be dropped off or mailed to the Leetonia Police Department, Attn: Chief Soldano, 300 E. Main St., Leetonia OH 44431.
