SALEM - Carolyn Jane Cleveland, 83, of Salem died at her home lovingly surrounded by family at noon on Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012.

Born Jan. 7, 1929 in Salem she was the daughter of the late Hobart M. and Ethel "Judy" Weingart Butcher.

Carolyn was a 1947 graduate of Salem High School and held a Bachelor of Arts degree in home economics as a graduate of Heidelberg College. She married her late husband, Alan H. Cleveland on March 3, 1951.

Her love of children led her to be the founder in 1969 of the First Christian Church Pre-School in Salem where she worked until she retired in 1999.

An avid reader, Carolyn loved to cook and for many years when she was physically able to do so, she enjoyed working in the garden. Her ability to counsel and give advice was a gift to many people. As a member of the First Christian Church, she served as a Sunday School and Bible School teacher, deaconess, Prayer Warriors leader, Christian Women's Fellowship member, Rachel Group member and more recently, a member of the "Fluff & Fold" group.

Carolyn had also been actively involved in many other groups and endeavors in the community. She was a member of the Red Hats Club, the Salem Book Club, the Columbiana County Home Economics Association, and a former Quota

Club member. She proudly held leadership positions in each of these organizations. For many years, she also served as a judge for the baked goods at the Canfield Fair. Carolyn and her husband, Al, were co-owners of The Shoe Tree in downtown Salem and she was involved as a host of a morning talk show on radio station WSOM.

As a believer in angels, Carolyn had a collection of over 200 angel figurines many of which were featured at last year's New Year's Eve Salem celebration held at the Salem Historical Society. She began giving oral presentations to groups in the mid 1990s and many knew her as a self-described angel enthusiast.

Carolyn loved the ocean and the beach and enjoyed many family vacations in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Survivors include a daughter, Audrey Cleveland Null of Salem and husband, Peter M., son-in-law William A. Mowery, and grandson, Matthew A. Mowery.

Other survivors include a brother, Edward H. Butcher and sister-in-law, Lois A., and nephew Hobart E. Butcher all of Salem, nieces Lynn Butcher Mather of Colorado Springs, Col., Patricia Bailey Lightner of Akron, Ohio, Annette Gibbon Cadwell of Naperville, Ill., and nephew John W. Gibbon of Chicago, Ill., and many great nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Cleveland was preceded in death by her husband who died on July 6, 2000 and her daughter, Kathryn Jane "Janie" Mowery who died on Jan. 18, 2012; sister Evelyn Butcher Bailey and brother David M. Butcher.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013 at Stark Memorial Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013 at the First Christian Church on East Sixth Street in Salem with Rev. Leonard Moore officiating. Calling hours will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at Grandview Cemetery.
