EAST PALESTINE- Donald E. Cornwell Sr., 79, of East Garfield Road, died at 7:18 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth's Boardman Campus where he was taken after becoming ill at home.
Donald was born June 22, 1933, in Circleville, a son of the late Charles William and Irene Belle (Nye) Cornwell, and had lived in Petersburg since 1965, coming from New Springfield. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the Korean Conflict. Donald had been employed 32 years as a coil handler with Republic Steel, retiring in the early 1980s. He had also worked for over 40 years with H.A. Felger & Son, starting at the early age of 9 years old.
His wife, Jo-Ann (Straley) Cornwell, whom he married July 25, 1953, preceded him in death on May 15, 2004.
Donald is survived by five sons, Donald E. (Theresa) Cornwell Jr. of Petersburg, Ronald (Rhonda) Cornwell of New Middletown, Douglas Cornwell of Boardman, Steven (Cindy) Cornwell of Corsica, Pa., and Jody Cornwell of the home; a daughter, Melissa Cornwell of New Middletown; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret Toy of New Castle, Pa.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday at the New Springfield Church of God with Pastor Alan Leach officiating. Friends will be received at the church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Private family burial will be at Crest Haven Memorial Gardens in New Waterford.
