Quaker girls soccer comes up short vs. Niles, 4-2

SALEM - Marissa Swindell and Courtney Wagoner scored but it wasn't enough for the Salem girls soccer team as Niles grabbed a 4-2 win over the Quakers on Saturday afternoon at Reilly Stadium.

Anna Wyss and Julia Dundon added assists for the Quakers.

Makenzie Schwartz had nine saves in goal.

Salem hosts Northeastern Buckeye Conference rival Louisville at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Minerva 5, United 1

MINERVA - Tyler Stewart registered four goals as Minerva stormed to a 5-1 win over United on Saturday.

Shem Haas had the Lions (2-0) other goal.

Justin Campbell had three assists, while Phillip Blackburn and Haas had one assist each.

United is 1-1.

United 4, Minerva 3

MINERVA - United's girls soccer team captured its third straight win to start the season by topping Minerva 4-3 on Saturday.

United trailed 2-0 at the half.

Megan Amos had two goals and an assist for the Eagles. Mackenzie Gatchel added a goal and assist, while Rachel Amos had a goal.

Lauren Haynam had two goals and an assist for Minerva. Josie Chaddock had the other goal.

Minerva is 0-1-1.

West Branch 4, Ravenna 1

RAVENNA - Dustin Greenawalt, Dylan Greenawalt, Josiah Ross and Casey Ruthrauff scored to lead West Branch to a 4-1 win over Ravenna on Saturday.

West Branch hosts Marlington on Tuesday.

West Branch 1, Canton GlenOak 0

BELOIT - Bailey Polinori scored the only goal as West Branch edged Canton GlenOak 1-0 on Saturday.

Lea Bock had two saves in goal for the Warriors, 1-1-0.

West Branch is at Marlington on Wednesday.

GOLF

Cardinal Classic

BOARDMAN - The East Liverpool boys golf team dominated the competition on Saturday at the Cardinal Classic at Mill Creek Golf Course.

The Potters finished atop the leaderboard with a 309. Their closest competiton was Green High School at 315 as the Potters have now won two of three tournament they've participated in this season.

East Liverpool's Blake Prince was the top golfer on the day, finishing with a 1-under 69.

Prince took low medalist honors by three strokes over Stow's Ian Holt who shot a 72.

Also for the Potters, Joey Cilone posted a round of 76, followed by Isaac Davidson (78) and Ryian Burson (86).

Columbiana took third with a 321. For the Clippers, Nathan Garofalo had a 77, Joe Lucci 77, Bruce Wiggins 79 and Clayton Cooper 88.

East Liverpool will be back in action on Monday against Beaver Local at East Liverpool Country Club.

VOLLEYBALL

Lisbon tri-match

LISBON - Lisbon captured a pair of matches at a tri-meet on Saturday featuring Southern and Leetonia.

Lisbon beat Leetonia 25-11, 25-10. Taylor Siefke had 10 kills and two aces, while Alexis Summers had five kills and eight digs. Ana Sanor added 10 assists, four digs and three kills. For Leetonia Ariel Smith had seven digs, five assists and seven points. Maddy Penfold added 10 digs and five points.

Lisbon (2-1) knocked off Southern 25-20, 25-22. Siefke had 14 kills, four blocks and two digs to lead the way. Hannah Hiscox added six kills, two aces and four digs. Sarah Boyd had 16 assists and four kills. For Southern, Hannah Brothers had 10 assists and four kills. Natalie Utt had 10 digs and four blocks. Brandi Hunt had six kills.

In the other match, Southern (1-2) beat Leetonia 25-16, 24-26, 25-19. Hunt had had six digs and five kills for Southern. Hannah Brothers added 10 points. Erica Gruszecki had 10 digs, five kills and 12 points for Leetonia, 0-2.

In jayvee action, Lisbon beat Leetonia 25-16, 25-17. Peyton Blackbun had five kills to lead Lisbon. Caitlin Lewis had five digs and six points for Leetonia.

Lisbon also beat Southern, 27-25, 24-26, 25-19. Emily Steves had five kills and seven digs for the winners.

Southern topped Leetonia, 25-16, 21-25, 25-13 in the other jayvee contest. Kirsten Gosselin had 13 points to lead the Indians. For Leetonia, Caitlin Lewis had 13 points.

West Branch tri-match

BELOIT - West Branch secured wins over Pymatuning Valley and United on Saturday in a tri-match at West Branch High School.

West Branch (3-0) beat Pymatuning Valley 25-17, 25-6. For the Warriors, Whitney Wallace had 12 points and five aces. Kaylee Manning added nine assists. Pavin Heath had eight kills, while Sydney Townes had six kills.

The Warriors knocked off United 25-19, 25-12. Whitney Wallace and Pavin Heath had six points and two aces each for the Warriors. Heath also had four kills along with Lexington Pittman. Logan Daggy had seven points for United. Morgan Smallwood added five kills.

In the other match, United (2-2) beat Py Valley, 25-19, 21-25, 25-21. MacKenzie Firth had 30 assists for the winners. Claudia Rockhold added 13 kills.

West Branch beat Py Valley, 25-22, 25-15 in jayvee action. Sarah Weber had six kills for the winners. The Warriors also beat United, 25-9, 25-13. Paige Walsh had 19 points and five aces for the winners.

United's jayvees were 24-26, 25-23, 25-21 winners over Py Valley. Shelby Mix had eight kills and seven aces for the Eagles.

East Palestine quad-match

EAST PALESTINE - East Palestine topped Howland 25-10, 25-12 and Brookfield 18-25, 25-21, 25-22 on Saturday in a quad match at East Palestine High School also featuring Springfield.

Against Howland, Carley Sansenbaugher had six kills, five points and two blocks. Jessica Leake had four kills and three points. Kristen Morris had nine points and six assists.

Against Brookfield, Sansenbaugher struck for seven kills and four points. Kristen Morris had nine assists and 10 points. Leake added four kills and 10 points.

East Palestine is 2-0 and is at Mooney on Monday.

Springfield knocked off Howland 25-12, 25-9 and Brookfield 25-12, 25-20 in the other matches.

Against Howland, Callie Ford had six kills and 14 points. Morgan Buchenic added five kills.

Against Brookfield, Kennedy Richey had 15 points. Ford added seven kills.
