Ohio Falls Prevention

Awareness Day to be marked

EAST LIVERPOOL - North Star Critical Care has joined forces with state and local partners in observing Sept. 22 as Ohio Falls Prevention Awareness Day. Celebrated each year on the first day of autumn, Falls Prevention Awareness Day was designed to educate Ohioans that the risks of falling may increase as they grow older, but that falling is not a normal part of the aging process and can be prevented. The theme for 2013 is "Preventing Falls, One Step at a Time."

The Ohio Departments of Health and Aging are working to reduce the incidence of falls, while the Ohio Older Adults Falls Prevention Coalition, an action group of the Ohio Injury Prevention Partnership, works to increase awareness of this issue and promote evidence-based policies and interventions at the state and local level.

Four "small steps" can help reduce your risk of falls and falls-related injuries: increase your physical activity; visit your eye doctor once each year; review your medications; and remove environmental hazards.

To learn about available trainings and resources to help reduce your risks of falling, contact North Star 330-386-9111 or 330-420-9111, your area agency on aging (866-243-5678) or your local health department (www.odh.ohio.gov).
