Fairfield trustees eye fire contract

FAIRFIELD TWP. - Trustees met in executive session for 30 minutes with New Waterford officials on Thursday to discuss the fire contract the township has with the village.

Fire and EMS protection is provided by fire levy and joint cooperation of the New Waterford Volunteer Fire Department, Leetonia Volunteer Fire Department, and Columbiana Fire Department through a contract with the township.

In July, trustees wanted more time to review a new, one-year fire contract with the New Waterford Fire Department.

Last year, the township paid $29,800 to New Waterford and this year the price was set at $33,505 based on a list of 2012 calls that placed the cost at $23,505.

"We'd like to review it a little more," Trustee Chairman Bob Hum said in July, noting the $33,505 was $10,000 more than the listed cost.

No action was taken after Thursday's meeting which included New Waterford Mayor Shane Patrone, Fiscal Officer Dave Slagle and Fire Chief Greg Van Pelt.

Hum said the township expects to take the matter up during its Oct. 17 meeting.

In other business, trustees passed a resolution to authorize Jim Santini Builders to use a tax exempt form when the company begins installing new doors and windows at the townships' government building.

Jim Santini Builders of Washingtonville was awarded the $69,997 job and Michael Fagan of Olsavsky and Jaminet Architects in Youngstown did the design work.

Trustees continued saying they were in no hurry to test out a new copier and Zoning Officer Kymberly Seabolt said she and Road Supervisor Mel Miller will work something out between the building upgrades which are expected to begin next week.

The township has already had one copier in for a test-run demonstration.

Hum has insisted that Seabolt and Miller do the evaluation because they will use the copier more than anyone.
