Public invited to community breakfast

DAMASCUS - The public is invited to the monthly community breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Damascus United Methodist Church, 300 Valley Road. The suggested donation is $5 for adults and $3 for children under 10.

Chamber 's annual meeting is Jan. 24

SALEM - The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual meeting on Jan. 24 at the Salem Community Center.

The luncheon buffet begins at 11:30 a.m. followed by the program at noon. Cost is $25 for chamber members and $30 for non-members.

The program will include the honoring of the 2013 Outstanding Citizen of the Year: Elaine Rousseau-Kothera; Large Business of the Year: Salem Regional Medical Center; and Small Business of the Year: Stark Memorial.

United Class of 2015 selling spirit shirts

HANOVERTON - The United Class of 2015 After Prom committee is selling spirit shirts that honor the memory of Gavin Ward. Proceeds benefit his classmates, the class of 2015.

Shirts are available in red with black and silver ink or blue with white and silver ink. Cost is $11 each in sizes youth medium-adult XL; add $2 for 2XL and 3XL.

Unkefer Scholarship applications available

MINERVA - Consumers National Bank announced Tuesday that its 2014 Homer Unkefer Agriculture Scholarship application is now available for students pursuing secondary education in an agricultural related profession. The scholarship is named in recognition of the late Homer Unkefer, a founder and director emeritus of Consumers National Bank and a life-long advocate for agriculture in Ohio.

The purpose of the Homer Unkefer Agriculture Scholarship is to provide financial assistance to students pursuing higher education which will prepare them for a career in agriculture. Applicants must be a high school senior attending a school in or residing in Carroll, Columbiana or Stark counties. Five awards in the amount of $1,000 each are based on the applicant's experience in agriculture, and must meet all of the educational eligibility requirements.

Applications for 2014 must be received by Consumers National Bank by April 30. Scholarship applications can be obtained at any of Consumers' 12 locations and from guidance counselors at local high schools.

Green Twp. zoning board will meet Feb. 4

SALEM The Green Township Board of Zoning will meet at 7 p.m. Feb. 4 in the zoning office at 12184 Lisbon Road. Members will discuss amendments to the current zoning regulations. The public is invited to attend.

Tax Aide program will begin Feb. 6

SALEM - The annual Tax Aide program, sponsored by the AARP Foundation in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service, will begin Feb. 6 at the Office on Aging in the Memorial Building, 785 E. State St. Taxes will be prepared, free of charge, by appointment from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Appointment may be made by calling the Office on Aging at 330-332-1163.

While the emphasis is on helping the elderly, the program is available to all ages. Membership in AARP is not required. AARP tax aides are capable of doing complete tax forms including earned income credit, child tax credit, educational credit and retirement savings credits.

People coming to the site should bring last year's taxes, all W-2's and 1099's, all other related documents for the current year, and also an itemized list of their medical bills and medical insurance premiums if applicable

To avoid identity theft, a drivers license or picture ID and the Social Security cards for the family and all dependents are required.

Alzheimer's support group will meet

ALLIANCE - The Alzheimer's Association will hold a monthly caregiver support group meeting at 2 p.m. Feb. 27 at Rodman Public Library, 215 E. Broadway St. Meetings are free of charge and open to all caregivers, family members, and friends with a loved one living with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia. Fat Tuesday fundraiser is March 4 at SCC

SALEM The Feed the Salem Community Pantry Fat Tuesday celebration will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. March 4 at the Salem Community Center. All proceeds will go to the Salem Community Pantry.

Celebrity chefs are needed for the fundraising event, sponsored by the Salem Community Center, Salem Rotary Club and Salem Kiwanis Club.

Those interested in becoming a celebrity chef will be asked to prepare food (small portions) for 50 people. Chefs must provide their own warming device (non-electric) and a server for their table. A sign with your name, or name of your business, will be provided and displayed on your table. The deadline to reserve a table is Feb. 14.

St. Paul confirmation class backing?Banquet

SALEM - Members of the St. Paul confirmation class will sponsor and serve the Banquet in Salem from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Memorial Building, 785 E. State St.

The menu includes wedding soup, roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, mixed vegetables, salad, fresh vegetables and fruit, and assorted desserts.
