Lisbon falls in OT despite Brownfield’s record night

LISBON–The Wellsville boys basketball team stayed in the thick of the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference race with a 75-67 overtime victory at Lisbon Friday.

The Tigers improve to 8-3 overall and 5-2 in the EOAC, one game behind first-place United, which knocked off East Palestine 58-48 Friday.

The Tigers entered the fourth quarter trailing by five before rallying to force an extra frame. Wellsville then outscored Lisbon 17-9 in overtime to walk out with the victory.

Garrett Scott scored 20 points to lead the Wellsville effort. He was helped out by 16 points from Derrick Suggs and 13 points from Cameron Davis.

Lisbon (6-4, 3-4 EOAC) got a big night from Branson Brownfield, who tied the school record with seven three-pointers on his way to 27 points and nine rebounds.

Brownfield now shares the mark with Zach Williams, Avery Andric and Austin Rutecki.

Freshman Ryan McCullough also had a strong game with 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Dougie Minor added 11 points. As a team, the Blue Devils hit 13 threes.

Wellsville won the jayvee game 54-51. Darien Suggs scored 18 points for Wellsville. Michael Davis scored 17 points for Lisbon.

The Blue Devils host United Tuesday.

COLUMBIANA–The Columbiana boys basketball team got its first league victory Friday with a 53-41 win over Leetonia.

The Clippers improve to 3-9 overall and 1-6 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference. Leetonia drops to 1-6 in the EOAC.

Erik Hopfenziz scored 13 points to lead the Clippers. Jared Wilson totaled nine points and dished out six assists. Matt Mazei logged eight points and 10 rebounds.

Roman Ferry led the Leetonia effort with 18 points. Caleb Witmer added 12 points.

Columbiana won the jayvee game 49-36. Chase Franken led the Clippers with 10 points. Ian Davis scored 10 points for the Bears.

NEW MIDDLETOWN–Springfield routed Mineral Ridge 76-56 in Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference boys basketball action Friday.

Shaney Eynon sparked the Tigers with 27 points, while Drew Clark provided 19 points. John Rotter and Clay Medvec each added 10 points.
