Stokes leaps to high jump title

GENEVA — After two close calls during the last two outdoor state track meets, Lisbon senior Seth Stokes has climbed to the top of the podium.

Stokes won the Division II-III boys high jump at the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches Association indoor state championship Saturday.

Stokes had a winning jump of 6-foot-6 to highlight area athletes at the SPIRE Institute. Nelsonville-York senior Chris Cook was second at the same height.

The top three returning underclassmen from the Division III state finals in June competed in Saturday’s meet as Stokes was the state runner-up, Cook was fourth and East Canton’s Josh Conrad was fifth. Conrad placed seventh in Saturday’s meet (6-2).

Salem turned in some standout performance as sophomore Hunter Christopher was fourth in in 3200-meter run (9:35.74). He is the only area runner to break the 10-minute mark the last four seasons.

South Range senior Ian Pierson was 22nd (10:22.17). The 3200 run was won by Buckeye Valley senior Zach Kreft (9:20.57), the Division II state cross country champion. Christopher and Pierson also ran in that state cross country race.

Salem’s talented duo of junior Caitlyn Marx and Abie Antram earned third-place finishes.

Antram was third in the girls weight throw (43-feet-5) and eighth in the shot put (36-6 1/2).

Marx was third in the shot put (38-8) and 14th in the weight throw (36-6 1/2).

In the boys 400-meter dash, Salem senior Quinlan Rumsey was seventh (51.80 seconds), South Range senior Cameron Tarr was 17th (52.78) and Crestview junior Jayce Meredith was 19th (53.02).

United senior Branden Endsley was eighth in the weight throw (51-8 1/4) and 12th in the shot put (45-6 1/2).

Minerva junior Joey Stafford was ninth in 1600 run (4:31.20), while United sophomore Jaret Hahn was 17th in the 600 hurdles (9.11) and Crestview freshman Ethan Powell was 17th in the 200 dash (23.33).

Among boys relay teams, Crestview was seventh in the 800 (1:34.67), Salem was 13th in 1600 relay (3:38.13). and South Range 23rd (3:44.34) in the 1600 relay; and South Range was 17th (8:48.79) and Salem 22nd (9:07.74) in the 3200 relay.

Minerva senior Mackenzie Scott topped area girls runners as she was third in the 1600 run (5:14.67) and fifth in the 3200 run (11:19.53).

Salem junior Haley Rozeski was seventh in the 1600 run (5:19.84) and Salem junior Lydia McKee was 23rd in the high jump (4-8).

The Salem girls were 15th in the 1600 relay (4:26.72) and 18th in the 800 relay (1:58.35).
