Warriors make a quick tournament exit

BELOIT–The third-seeded West Branch boys basketball team saw its season end with a 58-53 loss to sixth-seeded Struthers in a Div. II sectional final Friday.

The Warriors finish the season at 16-7 overall.

The Wildcats wasted no time in taking control as they jumped out to a 20-4 lead after the first quarter. West Branch battled back to cut the lead to 30-21 at halftime. The Warriors kept up the comeback bid in the third quarter and cut the lead all the way down to 41-38. However, Struthers had enough to hang on for the victory.

The Wildcats move on to face second-seeded Howland in a district semifinal at 7 p.m. Thursday at Boardman High School.

Western Reserve 60,

Springfield 46

BERLIN CENTER–Fourth-seeded Western Reserve took care of fifth-seeded Springfield 60-46 in Division IV sectional final action Friday.

Western Reserve (17-6) advances to take on top-seeded McDonald (ranked second in the state) in a district semifinal at 7 p.m. Monday at Struthers Fieldhouse. McDonald defeated Western Reserve 86-56 and 68-51 in Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference play this season.

Cole DeZee led Reserve with 21 points. Kade Hilles and Jack Cappabianca each had 14 points. Dom Velasquez had seven assists.

For Springfield, Drew Clark led the way with 14 points. Shane Eynon added nine points.

Lisbon 45

YOUNGSTOWN–The Lisbon boys basketball team was eliminated from the postseason with a 52-45 loss to Valley Christian Friday in a Div. IV sectional final.

The sixth-seeded Blue Devils finish the season 13-11. The third-seeded Eagles advance to take on seventh-seeded East Canton in a district semifinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Struthers Fieldhouse. Friday’s game was the third of the season between the two teams. They split their two regular season matchups.

Justin Sweeney powered the Blue Devils with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Branson Brownfield and Ryan McCullough rounded out the scoring for Lisbon with 11 and 10 points respectively.

Jacob Mundy supplied seven rebounds, while Brice Blackburn had six rebounds.

Milan Square led Valley Christian with 18 points. Melvin Neail added 13 points.

Mogadore 89, Southern 71

MOGADORE–The season came to an end for the Southern boys basketball team Friday as the seventh-seeded Indians were defeated by second-seeded Mogadore 89-71 in a Division III sectional final.

The Wildcats advance to take on the winner of today’s United-Campbell matchup in a Division III district semifinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Salem High School.

Jayce Sloan totaled 18 points for the Indians. Dominic Pugliano and Cam Grodhaus each had 12 points.
