Chester stays in first
EAST LIVERPOOL — The Chester Oldtimers beat Springfield, 5-4, in extra innings Sunday at East Liverpool High School to stay in first place in the Youngstown 50-plus baseball league.
Trailing 4-1, Chester scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra innings. Mike Logston hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the game.
Bill Sattler picked up the win in relief. Jub Whittaker and Brian Newlyn each had a double and single.
Chester plays at home at 2 p.m. next Sunday against Girard.
Akron will welcome Tiger
AKRON — Eight-time Bridgestone Invitational champion Tiger Woods has officially qualified for the 2018 and final World Golf Championship event at Firestone Country Club by virtue of his sixth-place finish at the British Open on Sunday.
Woods climbed 21 spots to No. 50 in the World Golf Rankings to earn the final berth at Firestone.
He last won on the PGA Tour at the 2013 Bridgestone Invitational. Woods has not competed at Firestone Country Club’s South Course since 2014, when he withdrew during the final round.
The tournament, which will be held Aug. 1 to 5 in Akron, will be moving Memphis, Tennessee, in 2019.
