Leetonia makes it two straight

LEETONIA — Roman Ferry scored all three touchdowns, but give the Leetonia football team all the credit.

The Bears are off to their first 2-0 start since 2008 as they ran over Mathews, 19-0, Friday.

Ferry ran for 138 yards and three touchdowns in the first half and finished with 192 yards on 25 carries.

Ferry scored on a weaving 59-yard run on the fourth play of the game and the Bears never looked back. Eli Duke added the extra point to give the Bears a 7-0 lead only 1:41 into the contest.

After a Mathews punt, D.J. Pierce intercepted a Leetonia pass and raced 30 yards into the end zone. The score was nullified by a penalty, but the Mustangs turned the ball over on downs at the Leetonia 20-yard line.

The Mustangs got to the Leetonia 33 on the next possession, but Brett Davis made a tackle for negative yardage on a fourth-and-6 play.

The Bears drove 65 yards on nine plays, getting 49 yards on six Roman Ferry runs. His 13-yard touchdown run made it 13-0 with 6:25 remaining in the second quarter.

A Mathews fumble then was recovered by Marco Ferry at the Leetonia 26 with 4:28 to go before halftime.

Leetonia ran out the clock, driving 64 yards on nine plays.

A 13-yard run by quarterback Brock Simpson set up a Roman Ferry 16-yard touchdown run with 35 seconds left in the half. But the play was nullified by a penalty.

At the Mathews 15, the Bears called a timeout with 9 seconds left and Simpson hit Dylan Lennon on an 11-yard gain as time expired. But a roughing the passer penalty on Mathews gave the Bears an untimed down at the 3-yard line.

Leetonia was going to attempt a field goal. But after a Mathews timeout, the Bears brought out their offense and Roman Ferry scored on sweep to the right, making it 19-0.

Leetonia will going for a third straight win next Friday when the Bears host Southington.
