Quaker crosses first

ALLIANCE — Salem junior Hunter Christopher raced to victory at the Ashley White Stumpf Invitational on Saturday.

Christopher topped the 276-runner boys field, covering the 3.1-mile course at Marlington High School in 16 minutes, 25.3 seconds. He bested the field by 14 seconds.

The Salem boys finished third out of 18 teams with 82 points, trailing Canton GlenOak with 44 and Massillon Perry with 73. The Quakers were tops in the Division II-III standings.

West Branch’s Jeff Joseph was fifth, United’s Daniel Frase seventh and Salem’s Trey Double ninth.

The Salem girls were fifth out of 18 teams with 160 points. Canton GlenOak also won the girls race with 77.

Crestwood sophomore Zoe Simmons was first out of 197 girls runners in 20:02.7.

Top area girls were Salem’s Carly Hall in ninth and East Liverpool’s Darshay Foster in 10th.

The annual meet was renamed in honor of the Marlington High School cross country runner who was killed in Afghanistan on Oct. 22, 2011, while serving in the Army.
