Rebels go on the attack
COLUMBIANA–It was another week of close football for the Crestview Rebels but this time they came out on the winning end with the 36-22 victory over Struthers on Friday.
“The biggest thing is our kids need to realize that there are going to be bad situations in a game and how are you going to respond to it. Tonight we did the right things. We had adversity and we responded,” said Crestview coach Paul Cusick.
Crestview and Struthers are both 1-1 on the season.
As the game began it looked like penalties were going to be the Rebel’s Achilles Heel but quarterback Stephen Barr and split end Dylan Huff helped the Rebels recover. After starting their first possession with a negative run and two 5-yard penalties, Huff carried the ball 15 yards for a first down. A false start by Crestview two plays later in the red zone was quickly forgotten once Barr ran 15-yards to give his team a 7-0 lead.
“Each and every play is a mini battle and we needed to win as many battles as we could,” said Cusick. “I thought our guys responded to that.”
Struthers came back on its next drive to tie the score on one of two big touchdown passes by quarterback DJ Hall. Hall’s 88-yard bomb to Carson Ryan, who shook off two Rebel defenders to get the score, tied up the game at 7-7.
This was the beginning of what looked to be a continuous back and forth battle with Crestview quickly responding with a 44-yard run by senior running back Andrew Yanssens. The Wildcats responded with a 49-yard touchdown pass by DJ Hall to Aiden Hall. Then it was Yanssens once again finding the endzone on a 2-yard run to take the 21-14 lead at the end of the second quarter. He finished the night with 129 yards on 20 carries. Barr who was 6-of-8 for 53 yards behind center also ran for 104 yards on 15 carries. The Rebel receivers were led by Dylan Huff who had 6 catches for 53 yards and one touchdown.
“We were able to spread the ball around and get everyone involved. The offensive line did a great job as well,” said Cusick.
After watching Struthers connect on two big passes during the first half the Rebel defense came out from halftime ready for it. During the second half, the Crestview defense caused DJ Hall to throw seven incompletions and a game ending interception. Gathering up the interception on the goal line and returning it 80 yards to the Wildcat 20 was senior Austin Brodigan.
“It was crazy,” said Brodigan when asked to describe the interception.
The Rebel defense also forced Struthers to turn the ball over on downs when Nick Sherrill took down their receiver in the backfield on an attempted fourth down conversion screen pass.
“They have really hurt us with screens in the past. We didn’t practice it all week but he got it. And that was a great time to get it,” said Cusick.
“All week we felt we weren’t up to par on defense and we thought a lot of teams looking at us this year thought that we were weak. We had a big chip on our shoulders to prove that we are not weak that we are for real,” said Brodigan.
For Struthers DJ Hall finished the night 14-of-27 for 314 yards and one interception. Keyshawn Chism led the Wildcat receivers with 136 on four catches, followed by Kevin Caldwell who also had four catches for 105 yards. Aiden Hall had two carries for 48 yards and Tyrese Hawkins had 43 rushing yards on six carries to round out the Wildcat leaders.
The Rebels will travel to face unbeaten South Range on Friday.
