Salem to try again today

CANTON — The only real winner at Friday night’s scheduled Salem at Canton South Eastern Buckeye Conference football game was the lightning.

The game never got underway as officials tried to wait out a violent storm and subsequent lightning that swept through Eastern Stark County in the early evening hours. But after two separate delays, they eventually decided to postpone the contest at 8:45 p.m.

It will be played today at 4 p.m. at South’s Brechbuehler Stadium. It’s also South’s Homecoming game.

The public address announcer at South said all fans at today’s game will be admitted free.

Ironically, following the storm that pounded the area at approximately 6 p.m., the rain actually ceased. However, lightning in the distant southeast sky could be seen by those in the press box.

After waiting out the first weather delay, the Quakers and Wildcats actually took the field for a 45-minute warm-up period. But 15 minutes into the warm-up, lightning was again spotted to the southeast and the teams and all fans were told to leave the field and stands and seek shelter.

After waiting out a second lightning delay, South officials met to hammer out a time to play the game today, eventually deciding on the 4 p.m. start time.

Salem enters the game 3-1 overall and 0-1 in the Eastern Buckeye Conference, while South is 1-3 overall and 1-0 in the EBC.
