Perry rolls back to state

MASSILLON –Crestview senior Dominic Perry had another routine victory in the shot put Friday.

“It’s routine to prepare for it, but you have to prove yourself,” he said. “You have to show everyone what you can do.”

Perry set a Massillon Perry High School stadium record with a winning toss of 58-feet-9 for his third straight Division III regional title.

The top four advance to the state meet at 1 p.m. Friday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.

He knows the place well after winning the Division III state title last year and finishing third in Division II as a sophomore.

“I want to show everyone the amount of work and dedication I’ve put into this sport and hopefully come up with a huge throw,” Perry said.

He will see many friendly faces there as all four state qualifiers are from the Springfield district — Mineral Ridge senior Nathan Chiclowe was second (51-10), McDonald senior Zach Gray was third (52-1) and Western Reserve freshman Ryan Henry was fourth (51-9).

Perry got off throws of 50-7 and 58-9 in the preliminaries, but fouled on his other four attempts.

He has another week to get ready for his final high school competition.

“It definitely goes by fast,” Perry said. “You have to make sure you go out and put in the repetitions and the work. You have to put in the work everyday. It’s easy to get distracted in practice. You have stay focused.”

He is focused on his last throws at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

“I remember all the people sitting on the hill and looking at you,” Perry said. “You have to take that in and say, ‘Look what I can do.'”
