Otero joins Scrappers
NILES – Cleveland Indians pitcher Dan Otero will make a rehab appearance with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers tonight.
Otero, who was on the injured list with a sore right shoulder, made his last appearance with the Indians on May 30 in Chicago.
The Scrappers, the Class A short-season affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, will host the Mahoning Valley Renegades at 7:05 p.m. today.
Chester improves to 7-2
EAST LIVERPOOL — The Chester Old Timers knocked off previously-undefeated Greenville, 7-6, at the East Liverpool High School baseball field.
Chester improves to 7-2 and is in second place in the American division.
Brett Smith led Chester with a double and single. Brian Wright and Will Bridges each had two hits and Mike Logston had a double.
Chester will play at Champion at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Mount Union men’s volleyball
ALLIANCE — The University of Mount Union men’s volleyball team has accepted an invitation to join the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League effective for the 2019-20 academic year.
Formed in 2014, the MCVL membership roster in 2019-20 along with Mount Union includes Adrian College (Adrian, Mich.), Fontbonne University (St. Louis, Mo.), Mt. St. Joseph University (Cincinnati, Ohio), Olivet College (Olivet, Mich.) and Trine University (Angola, Ind.).
The league also announced that Wabash College (Crawfordsville, Ind.) will join the MCVL in the 2020-21 academic year.
“The MCVL offers us great competition with teams from around our region and the opportunity to compete for a championship,” commented second year Mount Union head coach Matt Mihelic.
The Purple Raiders played their inaugural season a year ago and posted an 8-20 record.
Mount Union’s first MCVL match will be Jan. 20, 2020, against Olivet at Timken Gymnasium.
