Lisbon falls in overtime
POLAND — The Lisbon Blue Devils fought ferociously Saturday night in their contest with Valley Christian, but a key special teams miscue and big plays doomed them ina 28-20 overtime set back to the Eagles. The loss drops the Devils to 0-3 on the season while Valley Christian improves to 1-2.
“I’m so proud of my kids at how hard they fought tonight. I couldn’t have asked for anything more,” Lisbon coach Alan Mikovich said. “It was a great game, congratulations to Valley Christian.”
Faced with a fourth-and-3 in overtime and the Eagles leading 28-20, Ryan McCullough who had broken an electric 72-yard run in the fourth quarter was nailed in the backfield, sending the disappointed Blue Devil faithful home with a loss. McCullough had 114 yards on 18 carries.
The Devils had a chance to end the game with just under five minutes remaining in the contest when they took over at their own 27, leading 20-14. They ran three plays and only managed to advance the ball 5 yards, setting up a punt from the 32and just over three minutes remaining. But the Eagles Brandon Strong pushed the Devils blocker back into the punt by McCullough, setting the Eagles up at the Devils 25.
“The blocked punt was the turning point at hat point and time of the game,” Mikovich said. “Not saying that they couldn’t have mounted a drive if we had gotten it off. But it gave them the momentum at that point and time.”
The Eagles were able to score on a 3-yard run by Izaiah McKinley on the last play of regulation to tie the contest at 20-20. The Devils blocked the extra point to set up the overtime session.
“We grew as a team tonight,” Mikovich said. “I’m more concerned about Lisbon than anybody else, so I think Lisbon grew tonight and they are going to continue to get better.”
