Youth deer totals rise

From Staff Reports

COLUMBUS –Columbiana County youth hunters took 115 white-tailed deer during the special two-day youth gun season on Nov. 23-24 according the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife.

In 2018, county youth hunters harvested 84 deer.

Ohio’s young hunters checked 6,234 white-tailed deer during the two-day youth gun season. That number was slightly down from the 2018 total of 6,585,

Youth hunters were required to be accompanied by a nonhunting adult during the two-day season. Learning from an experienced hunter is key to developing the skills to successfully harvest a deer.

Ohio offers many more opportunities for hunters of all ages to pursue deer. The deer-gun season is Dec. 2 through Dec. 8, as well as Dec. 21-22. Deer-muzzleloader season is Jan. 4, through Jan. 7. Deer-archery season is open now through Feb. 2.

Youth hunting seasons are also available for small game, wild turkey and waterfowl.
