United teams split
KENSINGTON — United’s boys bowling team beat Sandy Valley 2,407-1,962 on Tuesday at Forest Lanes.
Garrett Bailey had a series of 381 and a high-game of 204 for the Eagles. Lloyd Grate added a 214 game.
Sandy Valley’s girls won 2,324-1,865. For United, Dorothy Herold had a series of 287 and a 153 high game. Jessica Walton and Shyanna Coleman had high games of 150.
United hosts East Liverpool today.
West Branch climbs
COLUMBUS — West Branch climbed four spots to ninth in the Associated Press Division II high school girls basketball poll released Tuesday.
The Warriors are 10-2 heading into today’s home game against Alliance.
Also in Division II, Marlington (10-3) is ranked 14th and Poland (11-2) is ranked 15th.
Poland defeated South Range, 51-35, on Monday to improve to 8-0 in the Northest 8.
Marlington dropped a 43-33 decision to unbeaten Louisville St. Thomas on Monday. St. Thomas (11-0), which also beat United 58-25 Saturday, is ranked 17th in Division IV.
Western Reserve (11-2) dropped three spots to 14th in Division IV. On Thursday, Western Reserve fell 34-33 to McDonald, now ranked 12th in Division IV.
Coaches vs. Cancer at United
HANOVERTON — United’s second Coaches vs. Cancer boys basketball game will be held Feb. 5 against Heartland Christian.
All proceeds will go to the Columbiana County Health Department Cancer Detention Clinic.
To help raise money, the school will be selling T-shirts, a gift basket rafle the day of the game and a 50/50 drawing.

Gates announces retirement
Antonio Gates, who became one of the most prolific tight ends in the NFL without playing a down of college football, announced his retirement Tuesday.
Gates spent his entire 16-year career with the San Diego and Los Angeles Chargers.
