Carlin returns to Scrappers
NILES — The Mahoning Valley Scrappers, in conjunction with the Cleveland Indians Player Development Staff, announced Luke Carlin as manager of the Scrappers for the 2020 season on Friday. Carlin was at the helm in 2017 for the Scrappers leading them to a 44-29 record and a Pinckney Division Title. He was then promoted to manager for the Lake County Captains for the 2018 and 2019 season. Previously, Carlin, served on the Akron staff in 2016. Carlin enjoyed a 14-year professional career from 2002-2015, appearing in 56 Major League games with San Diego, Cleveland and Arizona.
Salem wins pair
SALEM — Salem’s wrestling team knocked off Lisbon 60-12 and Malvern 39-33 on Thursday. Salem’s dual meet record improved to 10-3.
Dylan Newhouse (13-4) picking up two wins on the night for the Quakers. Also getting two wins for Salem were Lane Lafleme (12-7), Zarek Ross (9-10), Caiden Hart (15-0) and John Kidd (13-9).
Salem will take part in the Buck Bailey Invitational today at Wellsville High School.
Junior Quakers do well
HANOVERTON — The Salem junior high wrestling team defeated United, 87-6, Wednesday.
Picking up key victories for the Quakers were Pierce Stell, Ryen Crowe, and Trenton McCoy.
The Quakers will heading back to United today for a team dual tournament.
Pirates name managers
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates managers for their four full-season minor league affliates for the 2020 season include Brian Esposito at Class AAA Indianapolis, Dave Turgeon at Class AA Altoona, Miguel Perez at Class A Bradenton and Kieran Mattison at Class A Greensboro.
