McDonald upsets West Branch

BELOIT–The McDonald girls basketball team came away with a 50-43 upset over state-ranked West Branch in a marquee non-conference matchup Monday.

The Blue Devils improve to 19-2 overall, while the Warriors (ranked seventh in Div. II) fall to 18-3.

McDonald led by one at halftime before opening up a 10-point lead after three quarters.

Carly Scarpitti led the Warriors with 18 points. Peyton Alazaus added 15 points. Sophia Costantino led the Blue Devils with 15 points.

McDonald’s only two losses this season were to Western Reserve and Columbiana, which face each other Wednesday.

West Branch won the jv game 47-31.

The Warriors host Marlington Thursday.

United 37, Brookfield 33

HANOVERTON–The United girls basketball team downed Brookfield 37-33 on Monday.

United improves to 12-9 and is at Jackson-Milton Thursday.

The Eagles were led by Celeste Powers with 13 points and Celeste Hofmeister with eight points.

United also won the jv game 48-24 behind 15 points from Kendyl Daggy.

MINERAL RIDGE–The Columbiana girls basketball team was upset by Mineral Ridge 53-52 on Monday.

Grace Witmer had 18 points for the Clippers, while Kayla Muslovski added 12 points.

The Clippers led 28-14 after the first quarter, but were held to 24 points the rest of the game.

Columbiana is at MVAC co-champion Western Reserve on Wednesday.

BERLIN CENTER–The Western Reserve girls basketball team fell to Struthers 58-42 on Monday.

Dani Vuletich led the Blue Devils with 17 points, while Alyssa Serensky added 10 points.

Western Reserve hosts EOAC champion Columbiana on Wednesday.

LEETONIA–The Leetonia girls basketball team beat Lowellville 49-40 on Monday.

Taran Ferry and Samantha Schneider each scored 10 points to lead the Bears. Schneider grabbed seven rebounds, while Ferry had seven steals and five assists.

Megan Rosko added eight points and seven rebounds for Leetonia. Ella Gregorino finished with nine points.

Leetonia won the jv game 13-6. Molly Gibson scored 13 points for the Bears. Leetonia hosts Campbell Wednesday.
