Quakers off and running in postseason

SALEM–The Salem girls basketball team got its tournament run off to a flying start with a 64-32 victory over 13th-seeded Youngstown Chaney in a Div. II sectional opener Saturday at Cabas Gymnasium.

The fourth-seeded Quakers advance to host fifth-seeded Cardinal Mooney in a sectional final at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Jaden Hamilton led a balanced effort for the Quakers with 10 points. Abbie Davidson added nine points and five steals, while Annie Davidson had eight points, seven rebounds and five steals. Kyla Jamison also scored eight points. Kami Rohm grabbed five rebounds. Everyone on the Salem roster saw playing time.

On defense, the Quakers pressured Chaney into 31 turnovers.

Steubenville 53

STEUBENVILLE–The Minerva girls basketball team held off Steubenville 58-53 in a Div. II sectional opener Saturday.

The ninth-seeded Lions (13-10) will travel to second-seeded Indian Creek for a sectional matchup at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Steubenville finishes the season at 12-11.

Maddie Foutz scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead Minerva, while Jenna Cassidy had 12 points. Elyssa Imler and Coletta Miller each added 10 points. Gina Slentz had seven points and five rebounds.

REGULAR SEASON

McDONALD 43, Crestview 29

COLUMBIANA–McDonald pulled away in the fourth quarter to topple Crestview 43-29 in regular season girls basketball action Saturday.

The Rebels close the regular season at 14-8 overall. The Blue Devils, who are ranked 11th in Div. IV finish at 20-2.

Krista Perry led the Rebels with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Addison Bandy added eight points.

Molly Howard scored 21 points to lead McDonald.

Crestview won the jv game 24-22. Laney Ericson had 9 points for the Rebels.

The Rebels begin tournament action at 1 p.m. Saturday when they host the winner between Rootstown or Canton Central Catholic in a Div. III sectional final. The Blue Devils will also a Div. IV sectional final at 1 p.m. Saturday against either Wellsville or Heartland Christian.
