Quakers work overtime

SALEM — Salem came back from a nine-point halftime deficit to knock off Boardman 60-56 in overtime on Thursday in the Quakers’ regular season finale.

Boardman built a 31-22 lead at the half before the Quakers took the lead with a 19-8 third quarter.

The teams went to overtime with the score tied at 53 and Salem pulled out the win by outscoring the Spartans 7-3 in the extra period.

Abbie Davidson had 15 points, five boards and three steals for Salem, 13-9. Jaden Hamilton put up 14 points with seven rebounds and three steals and Kyla Jamison chipped in 12 points and snagged 12 rebounds. Casey Johnson tallied eight points while Annie Davidson has five steals on the defensive end. Seniors Hayden Carner and Taylor Troy combined for another seven steals while anchoring the Quakers on the defensive end.

Maria Torres led the Spartans with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Raegan Burkey added 15 points.

Salem will host Youngstown Chaney in a Div. II sectional opener on Saturday night.

Boardman ended the regular season 5-17. The Spartans will travel to Cuyahoga Falls for a Div. I sectional opener on Saturday.

• Former Boardman and Columbiana head girls basketball coach Ron Moschella was on hand watching the game.

• Salem senior Echo Mayer-Kutz has missed all season with a knee injury and Boardman allowed her to score Salem’s opening basket. Mayer got a few hugs from her teammates before exiting the game.
