West Branch goes down to the wire with Clips


COLUMBIANA — West Branch held Columbiana scoreless in the final 90 seconds to pull out a 45-39 win Tuesday night.

The Warriors improve to 17-4 and have 49 wins over the last three seasons. The Clippers finish the regular season at 18-4.

Reese Leone and Nick Everett each scored 12 points to lead the Warriors.

West Branch opened up a pair of 11-point leads early in the second quarter at 15-4 and 17-6 before Columbiana closed the gap to 26-19 at halftime.

The Warriors scored at the buzzer to take a 34-33 lead through three quarters.

Columbiana stayed close in the fourth quarter, trailing 39-38 with 2:30 to play and 41-39 with 1:32 remaining.

The Clippers had the ball, but turned it over with 33 seconds left. Off the West Branch inbounds play, Everett passed to Leone for a layup and foul at the 29-second mark.

Dru DeShields grabbed the offensive rebound off the missed free throw and Leone made a pair of free throws to give the Warriors a 45-39 lead with 16 seconds to go.

Sean Whitehead topped the Clippers with 12 points. Hunter Zentner collected nine points, six rebounds and two steals, Matthew Mazei grabbed eight rebounds and Carter Pasco made two steals.

West Branch also won the junior varsity game, 56-36.

LEETONIA — Crestview took an eight-point lead into the fourth quarter and held on for a 56-54 win over Leetonia on Tuesday.

The Rebels improve to 7-14 overall.

Kirkland Miller topped the Rebels with 13 points. Jack Yerkey collected 12 points and nine rebounds, Drake Golden 10 points and seven rebounds, Anthony Cusick scored seven of his nine points in the fourth quarter to go along with five rebounds and Brandon Yanssens had five assists and three steals

Dylan Lennon and Ian Davis each scored 15 points for the Bears. Marco Ferry added nine points.

Leetonia won the junior varsity game, 35-33. Jacob McCool led the Bears with 15 points. Nick Novak scored nine points for the Rebels.

Crestview closes out the regular season at Heartland on Friday.

MALVERN — Derk Hutchison scored 22 points through three quarters in leading Malvern past United, 73-48, Tuesday.

John Browning added 15 points and Michael Minot 12 for the Hornets, who led 22-8 in the first quarter.

Nate Miller topped United with 18 points. Keaton Baker added eight points.

Malvern also won the junior varsity game, 50-27.

United closes out the regular season at Salem on Friday.
