County Classic called off
From Staff Reports
LISBON — The Columbiana County Basketball Coaches Association announced that the Columbiana County Classic All-Star Basketball Games scheduled for Sunday at Lisbon High School have been canceled due to the coronavirus COVID19.
Don Thompson, director of the Columbiana County Basketball Coaches Association, issued a statement on Wednesday saying that “the restriction on public gatherings and our intent for the safety of our student athletes and the general public led to this decision.”
The Al Beach Classic and Frank Bubba All-Star Classic, which included players from Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull Counties, were also canceled as was the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference-Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference All-Star Games set for Monday.
Thompson expressed regret having to cancel the game but the organization will push forward in issuing its annual scholarships.
“It is unfortunate that this year’s seniors will not have the final opportunity to showcase their abilities to the fans of basketball in Columbiana County,” Thompson wrote in the release. “In an effort to salvage some of what the Classic has become known for, we intend to continue to provide scholarships to selected seniors around the county. The scholarship winners will be announced at a later time, however, we are obliged to request that the sponsors of advertising in this year’s game honor their pledge in light of these difficult conditions. By honoring that pledge we will be able to continue our scholarship efforts.”
Thompson said he would like to thank the sponsors for their efforts in increasing the scholarship fund. In the past 35 years of the Classic, the organization has awarded nearly $450,000 to 250 recipients.
