Pirates sign top pick
PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Pirates announced Wednesday they signed shortstop Nick Gonzales, the club’s first-round selection and seventh overall in the 2020 draft.
The 21-year-old Gonzales was named the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper’s National Player of the Year in 2020 after hitting .448 (26-for-58) with three doubles, one triple, 12 home runs and 36 RBI in 16 games for New Mexico State University. He topped the NCAA in home runs, runs scored and RBIs.
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York City Marathon was canceled Wednesday because of the coronavirus pandemic, with organizers and city officials deciding that holding the race on Nov. 1 would be too risky.
Organizers announced the cancellation of the 50th anniversary edition of the world’s largest marathon after coordinating with the mayor’s office and deciding the race posed too many health and safety concerns for runners, volunteers, spectators and others.
“While the marathon is an iconic and beloved event in our city, I applaud New York Road Runners for putting the health and safety of both spectators and runners first,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement.
“We look forward to hosting the 50th running of the marathon in November of 2021.”
Last year’s marathon included a world record 53,640 finishers.

Only individuals who have renewed season tickets and completed per-seat contributions by June 30 will be included in potential stadium seating plans. Spokesman Steve Roe said about 35,000 season tickets and 5,000 student tickets have been sold.
